- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think, act, and learn.
- Machine Learning (ML)
- A subset of AI — computers use statistical techniques to learn from data without being explicitly programmed to do so.
- Virtual Reality (VR)
- Replaces the real-world environment with a fully immersive digital one (headsets/goggles).
- Augmented Reality (AR)
- Overlays digital elements onto the real world, enhancing rather than replacing it.
- Business Associate Agreement (BAA)
- A contract between a HIPAA-covered entity and a vendor handling PHI, ensuring HIPAA-compliant privacy/security standards.
- Digital divide
- The risk that clients without reliable internet/technology access are left behind by digital-first assessment tools.
- Telehealth etiquette
- Boundaries/norms (setting, timing, professionalism) a counselor must establish for remote sessions.

Clinical checkpoints
- Match the platform type (cloud/web/app/desktop/mobile/hybrid) to the client's actual access and privacy needs — don't default to whatever's newest
- Treat AI/ML tools as a supplement to clinical judgment, not a replacement — stay alert to potential bias in the tool
- Confirm any third-party vendor handling client data has a signed BAA and complies with HIPAA/FERPA/GDPR as applicable
- Update informed consent language explicitly for digital tools — plain language on what's collected, how it's used, and how it's protected
- Weigh the digital divide before assuming a digital-first assessment approach serves every client equally
- When moving a client to telehealth (e.g., a life transition like Sarah's move to college), address session etiquette and boundaries explicitly, not just the technical setup
